Motivation is the desire to attain a goal. Teacher motivation reflects students' motivation. The decision to use technology in classrooms depends on teachers themselves.(Ertmer,2005). The beliefs they have about computers in their minds can serve as a barrier or a booster. Teachers, especially the first generation teachers are reluctant to change from traditional teaching to technology enhanced teaching. The use of digital whiteboard also means possessing It skills. Teachers lack interest and ease with computers. Some teachers avoid using computers because bad command with computers may affect their image.(Semary. H.2005)
Previous experiences Previous experience leads to better classroom management skills.A teacher with limited previous IT experience may face difficulties in managing the classroom and hence making technology integration difficult. Training Lack of professional development for technology use is a serious problem in our schools. Teachers may not attempt to use computer based learning activities in their class if they do not possess basic skills in computer. Teachers who studied in schools before the technolgy era are often not interested to attend training and workshops. Technology training is not a priority for them as they believe in content delivery in the way it suits them rather than students. Class size: Teacher pupil ratio in Mauritian schools, especially in the primary sector is a reason which discourages some teachers to integrate technology in learning.
Lack of time In many schools the pressures related to examinations and pass percentage leave teachers with little time to use new instructional methods. Many teachers consider technology based instruction as time consuming, as their priorities are completing the syllabus and improving end of the year assessment results. Technology is only used for assessment purpose while setting up examination papers. Even students experience pressure to meet high standards for tests.
Funding Lack of resources: Without adequate number of computers and computer software, teachers may encounter difficulties to implement the use of technology. The budget for technology in our schools is limited. Technology is meaningless if only one computer is available for the whole school. Schools do have one IT lab which is for ICT . Insufficient access to technology is a problem which needs stakeholders attention.
Lack of space Lack of space to set up special sankore rooms forces students to move from their classrooms to classrooms where smart boards are. Moreover there are visit time to the sankore classrooms, which means a teacher cannot use another teacher's time to use digital whiteboards.
Lack of computer technicians There are limited human resources in our schools when it comes to technology devices. In case of equipment failure the school must wait for a technician who may be from outside the organisation.
Life time of computers Compared to traditional blackboards which lasted for years a computer may break down at any time.
